The Word "Draft" of Draft Beer
People have enjoyed beer because it simply has a taste that soothes the throat, even if that taste is somehow bitter and different. This is what spices up the beer. Also, the way it is served and produced brings a different spark to the beer itself. This is why there are various types of beer nowadays. There are several terms and names and brands, simply because beer comes in various styles and tastes.
For example, the serving styles of beer; take the draft beer as an example. Draft beer is also called draught beer or tap beer. Although, draft beer has been called in several terms and it is understood in different ways, a common understanding is that draft beer is described as filtered beer that has been served from a pressurized container, like a keg or a widget can or a keg. But, generally, it is understood that draft beer is served from a huge vessel.
The history of draft beer would explain why the word has several meanings or interpretations. It is because of the evolution of the word and the patents involved. First, it was because of the way of carrying the beer, the drawing of the beer, the serving of the beer, and then in the act of drinking of the beer.
Draft beer may still mean differently in different countries. In America, draft beer is usually un-pasteurized. It must be kept refrigerated at low degrees --- approximately between 2 to 4 degrees Centigrade, and must be consumed quickly after being "tapped". This is because if it is above 6 degrees Centigrade, then the beer may turn sour and cloudy within two days. But, if it is stored in the right temperature, then it can last to at least a month before its fresh taste and aroma is lost. In UK, draft beer is always pasteurized. In Japan, draft beer is not pasteurized, although it may be filtered to give it a fresher taste, but it has a shorter shelf life than the other conventional packaged beers.
It is important to know then that when you order draft beer, make sure that you know what it means in that particular place. This is what makes draft beer quite interesting in some aspect. Draft beer in one country may not actually be "draft beer" in another. It pays to know what you order, to get the taste you want.
